I Want to Start Carrying Where do I Start?

Updated: Mar 23, 2022

This is a normal question we see a lot. Folks want to start carrying but don't know where to start, we can help.

The advice I usually give to people is, mainly you want to make sure you do everything you can to be an asset not a liability. This is done through training. You have to know your ability level with the gun you want to carry. How long does it take to draw and shoot from 3 yards, okay, now how about 20 Yards? The list never ends of areas to test and train.

Mindset is also very important. Most situations can be avoided if you have your wits about you. Situational awareness is huge. Paying attention is something everyone could practice even if they aren't planning on carrying. If you are in a situation where you feel vulnerable there is probably a good reason for that feeling. Visiting an ATM is a good example of a situation where we want to be aware of our surroundings. Where do I park? What time of day is it? Are there other cars parked that could easily pull up on me? How can I stand so I can use the ATM but also be able to monitor my environment? All good questions that will lead to good situational awareness.

So, when you first start looking into carrying a handgun go get your permit but don't stop there. Seek training so you can develop your ability levels more and more. Test yourself and see how you perform. Don't forget the power of the mind. Train yourself to pay a little more attention. avoid getting locked into things like cell phones, you may just see something coming you would have missed.
